Fiction / Truth?

If “fiction is the lie that tells the truth,” can it not be said,  “Truth is the reality that reveals the lie?”

The ‘fiction is the lie . . .’  quote is attributed to multiple sources, including Albert Camus (1913-1960), French philosopher, author, dramatist, journalist, world federalist, and political activist. In, he Stranger, Camus wrote, “fiction is the lie through which we tell the truth.”

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The state Board of Education approved school closings in four separate votes Wednesday.

As more schools are up for closure, state board members point to population loss, financial constraints

By Brad McElhinny /November 14, 2024 – 12:04 am

In a difficult discussion about closing West Virginia schools because of declining enrollment, a former state senator now serving on the state school board took issue with lawmakers who lament the loss of community schools without taking action that could alleviate their financial pressures.

“It rings hollow to me when legislators go — and I’m probably going to offend two of my friends — but when they go in the paper and they send letters here and say they want smaller schools. Well, guess what ladies and gentlemen, they have the ability to effectuate the change,” said Paul Hardesty, whose role on the state school board calls for him to be a liaison to the Legislature.

Some public schools in danger of closure could consider converting to charter schools, officials suggest

By Brad McElhinny November 20, 2024 – 1:19 pm / (Pixabay)

Representatives of the West Virginia Professional Charter School Board say communities that are having to consider shutting down local public schools are asking whether an alternative might be to convert them into charter schools.

Charter schools receive financial support from the state’s public education system and are given greater operational latitude in exchange for the possibility of losing their right to operate if they fail. There are six charter schools in West Virginia now, although two of those are virtual. Two more are set to open in fall 2025.

Energy

Yesterday, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported five states produced more than 70% of the record 113.1 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) of U.S. marketed natural gas production in 2023. Two of the five were in the Marcellus/Utica: Pennsylvania (18% of the country’s gas) and West Virginia (8% of the country’s gas). We did some digging and found that when adding the production from PA, WV, and OH, the three together represented 31.5% of all the natural gas produced in the U.S. in 2023. It is an astonishing fact!

Gas Pushes Half Of U.S. Power, Leaving Little For Coal

Curtis Tate Published October 8, 2024 – 1:24 pm

Hotter weather, low natural gas prices and new natural gas power plants combined to push gas toward the 50 percent mark in U.S. electricity generation over the summer.

For many years, coal was in that dominant position. It last came close in 2008, but has steadily fallen since, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Last year, coal slid to just 16 percent of U.S. electricity generation.

The power needs of data centers run by America’s technology giants will open the door to new natural gas-fired generation under a strategy advanced by the largest U.S. grid operator, pushing aside carbon-free wind and solar projects.

The state’s law prohibits prescription of puberty blockers, hormones and surgery for minors, but only those who are transgender. The justices will weigh whether that violates the Equal Protection Clause of the Constitution because it discriminates . . .
