Colony leaders saw the grammar schools as a means to ensure children acquired the basic literacy skills that would enable them to gain knowledge of the scriptures and thereby \u201cconfound the devil.\u201d<a href=\"#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\">[i]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As time progressed, the United States public education system inculcated an historic patriotic-religious admixture reenforced to varying degrees through legal, social and societal structures and norms, including church affiliation and attendance throughout the nation., which remained strong until a few decades ago.<a href=\"#_edn2\" name=\"_ednref2\">[ii]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In terms of a harbinger, however, the U.S. Supreme ruled in 1943 students <em>cannot be forced to salute and pledge allegiance to the<\/em>\u00a0U.S. flag. <a href=\"#_edn3\" name=\"_ednref3\">[iii]<\/a> Some 19 years later, the high \u00a0court \u00a0rejected school officials\u2019 sanctioned prayer and devotional Bible-readings. <a href=\"#_edn4\" name=\"_ednref4\">[iv]<\/a><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_809\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-809\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-809\" src=\"https:\/\/chopwoodcarrywaterllc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/harvest_fellowship.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"536\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chopwoodcarrywaterllc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/harvest_fellowship.jpg 400w, https:\/\/chopwoodcarrywaterllc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/harvest_fellowship-224x300.jpg 224w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-809\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Harvest Time Church of God<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nRise of the \u2018<\/strong><strong>nones\u2019 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The contemporary iteration of the Christian Charismatic Movement,\u00a0 which shares some faith similarities with Pentecostalism, <a href=\"#_edn5\" name=\"_ednref5\">[v]<\/a> occurred in 1960. <a href=\"#_edn6\" name=\"_ednref6\">[vi]<\/a> Evangelical Churches had a strong emergence in the 1970s. In fact, the 1976 U.S. presidential election was termed \u201cthe year of the Evangelical.\u201d<a href=\"#_edn7\" name=\"_ednref7\">[vii]<\/a> (\u201cEvangelicalism\u201d is a term encompassing wide swaths of Christian belief and practices. <a href=\"#_edn8\" name=\"_ednref8\">[viii]<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, some conservative Fundamental Christian churches,<a href=\"#_edn9\" name=\"_ednref9\">[ix]<\/a> along with consenting Evangelical churches and branches or \u201cbreakaway\u201d bodies of mainline churches, embraced conservative politics to \u201cright\u201d societal leanings or movements seen as affronts to these churches\u2019 Biblical understandings or of social issues, especially abortion access, which the U.S. Supreme Court \u201clegalized\u201d in 1973, forming an easy alliance with the Roman Catholic Church to promote \u201cpro-life\u201d legislation.<\/p>\n<p>Despite expectations by their leaders, neither movement \u00a0nor flourishing mega-churches, largely an outgrowth of Evangelicalism, staunched decline in church attendance.\u00a0\u00a0 Moreover, during the past several decades, pollsters document a steady rise in those persons who don\u2019t identify with traditional religious affiliation \u2013 so-called \u201cnones\u201d <a href=\"#_edn10\" name=\"_ednref10\">[x]<\/a> with a concomitant increase in personalized or individualized Christian beliefs, meaning one identifies as Christian without bona fides of organized faith practice or assembly \u2013 culturally Christian. <a href=\"#_edn11\" name=\"_ednref11\">[xi]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This development leads some researchers and pundits to conclude new groupings of Evangelicals are emerging, although a New York Times account includes reporters\u2019 interviews of \u00a0persons saying they had lapsed in regular church attendance. <a href=\"#_edn12\" name=\"_ednref12\">[xii]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Comparisons with Europe \u00a0prove \u201cjagged\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The fancy to compare developments in U.S. Christianity to \u00a0European Christianity, especially in terms of\u00a0 Church attendance, is a jagged proposition primarily\u00a0 because the U.S. is not Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The United States\u2019s religious experience includes an often-articulated desire for one to practice his or her religion \u2013 or no religious practice &#8211; without governmental cooption, although legislative bodies and courts prescribe lawful boundaries that respect largely \u00a0judicially-articulated church\/state entanglements. <a href=\"#_edn13\" name=\"_ednref13\">[xiii]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another difference: Wars and struggles between nation\/city states, provinces, empires and monarchies emerged in wake of the Protestant Reformation. Historically, European soil is soaked with blood<a href=\"#_edn14\" name=\"_ednref14\">[xiv]<\/a> from myriad revolutions, wars, including two World Wars, pogroms, genocides, the Nazi Holocaust, state-induced famines, ethnic, religious and cultural strife, leading European intellectuals and not a few political leaders to become fed up with God and Christianity,<a href=\"#_edn15\" name=\"_ednref15\">[xv]<\/a> although churches remain open and Europeans embrace Christian practices such as baptism often desiring church \u00a0weddings and funerals. <a href=\"#_edn16\" name=\"_ednref16\">[xvi]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>American religious expression, unfettering itself from state-supported churches in the early days of the nation, prompts religious diversity. Most importantly, however, \u00a0American soil, while soaked with the blood of the American Revolution, the War of 1812, Mexican-American War (Battle of San Jacinto near Houston) and the \u00a0American Civil War, warded off direct invasion by enemy forces during both World Wars, although Wake Island, Guam and the Aleutian Campaign in WWII\u00a0 may \u201cqualify,\u201d according to some historians.\u201d <a href=\"#_edn17\" name=\"_ednref17\">[xvii]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Civil religion and cumulative effects <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Are we at a place where U.S. Christian \u201cidentity\u201d is embraced decidedly\u00a0 by traditional church affiliation wherein Christians are admonished to \u201cnot neglect to meet together\u201d (Hebrews 10:25) as well as civil religion trappings, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Governmental invocations and benedictions, which may include representatives of other faiths;<\/li>\n<li>Displays of Christian faith adherence by athletes, celebrities and other influencers;<\/li>\n<li>Legislative enactment of bills requiring display of national religious mottos in public places;<\/li>\n<li>Continued church affiliation\/attendance by Christians whose expressions of faith may include emphasis on ministries to address social issues or to advance societal justice causes, which attract brigades of volunteers?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(More to the point: Has \u201cChristian identity\u201d always been a pliant term open to one\u2019s self-definition or practice or non-practice, including civil religion emphases? To what degree should this be the \u2018lead\u2019 question? \u00a0Many \u00a0persons of other faith \u00a0expressions may contend Christian faith fares well, despite internecine conflicts, \u00a0in informing governmental policy, mores and customs in West Virginia and the United States.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Loss of Biblical Literacy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In other words, U.S. Christianity, if \u2018admitting\u2019 greater recognition of civil Christian religion and if church attendance continues its precipitous decline which Gallup notes at 30 percent, <a href=\"#_edn18\" name=\"_ednref18\">[xviii]<\/a> what might be the cumulative generational effect in terms of U.S. society, culture, politics, arts? How does diminished Biblical Literacy<a href=\"#_edn19\" name=\"_ednref19\">[xix]<\/a> &#8211; see term in the Endnote &#8211; \u00a0bode for the nation in terms of societal response to complex social issues or questions? Will a potential void in Biblical grounding make some Americans susceptible to rhetoric and demagoguery by who bear tidings from a \u2018Gospel\u2019 of their making, including social media influencers, technocrats, politicians or political leaders? Or, has this always been the case with, perhaps, social media reliance being the predictive arbiter?<a href=\"#_edn20\" name=\"_ednref20\">[xx]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>No matter, today\u2019s Christian expression occurs in a world that may, unfortunately, lack peace or stability because of the rise of competing global powers, nationalism, myriad geopolitical pacts and reliance on war, fear, panic, terrorism, prompting the question whether the Age of Enlightenment is closing.<a href=\"#_edn21\" name=\"_ednref21\">[xxi]<\/a> \u00a0Has the sky fallen for \u00a0some peoples?<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cIs The truth today the truth tomorrow\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Moreover, voices generationally removed from \u00a020<sup>th<\/sup> Century World Wars, the Nazi Holocaust, state repression throughout the world, nuclear threats and atrocities may decline conventional U.S. interpretations of these events, which begs the question: \u201cIs the truth today the truth tomorrow?\u201d <a href=\"#_edn22\" name=\"_ednref22\">[xxii]<\/a> We may need to get used to newer historical thought interpretations along with entrepreneurial, \u201ccrowd,\u201d spectacle politics, the notion \u201cSummer of Love\u201d politics and bipartisanship may be DOA in halls of government; and the rise of the sentiment <em>only \u00a0<\/em>entrepreneurial political leadership will steer us to calmer seas by displacing traditional or past government stances or alliances?<\/p>\n<p>Bluntly put, these developments may be evolutionary but their import is intensified by the nation\u2019s divided politics.<\/p>\n<p>While historical precedent is no guarantee, \u00a0these developments could occur intensify through political \u00a0populism \u2013 perhaps a \u201csafety valve\u201d <a href=\"#_edn23\" name=\"_ednref23\">[xxiii]<\/a>until settled times occur, allowing the electorate to determine policy outcomes, based on today\u2019s emergent trajectory \u2013 no assurance everyone is pleased.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret Mead said, \u201cNever doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it&#8217;s the only thing that ever has\u201d <a href=\"#_edn24\" name=\"_ednref24\">[xxiv]<\/a>\u2013 that is by thinking globally, acting locally, let\u2019s ensure a world emerges with largess of personal freedom, liberty and the pursuit of justice.<\/p>\n<p>That world is within reach.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ednref1\" name=\"_edn1\">[i]<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/web.csulb.edu\/colleges\/cla\/projects\/EM\/smdeluder.html#:~:text=The%201647%20legislation%20known%20as,children%20to%20read%20and%20write\">https:\/\/web.csulb.edu\/colleges\/cla\/projects\/EM\/smdeluder.html#:~:text=The%201647%20legislation%20known%20as,children%20to%20read%20and%20write<\/a> (Contains complete text.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ednref2\" name=\"_edn2\">[ii]<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/eric.ed.gov\/?id=ED592601\">https:\/\/eric.ed.gov\/?id=ED592601<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ednref3\" name=\"_edn3\">[iii]<\/a> West Virginia State Board of Education v.
